Computer reboots itself indiscriminately

A common problem reported is the computer keep rebooting itself or keeps rebooting on startup. There are various possible reasons for such random rebooting -
• Hardware failure or issue
• A virus infecting your system
• Overheating.

Following are ways to check this issue out before you call and IT Professional, or perhaps to avoid calling one.

Possible Causes & Solutions:

1. Check all your hardware. A loose connection or a faulty piece of piece of equipment, i.e., a video card could be causing the rebooting. If your RAM is not seated properly or is corrupt, the computer will display an error message on the screen and keeps rebooting itself. The same problem occurs with a hard disk. You can use 'Memtest86' to run a test on your RAM. See our file Vault to download a Win ISO this program, burn it to a DVD and boot from it.

2. An error message like a "system failure error" may occur before the reboot takes place. This problem has a specific solution.

__________3.2. If your computer keep still reboots in the safe mode, then the problem is with the operating system or hardware.
__________3.3. While in safe mode you can run defrag, or disable any errant software running that might be causing the problem.

4. Over heating could cause your computer to keep rebooting itself. The fan responsible for keeping the CPU cool, may be malfunctioning or clogged with dust.
__________4.1. Clean the fan area with compressed air or replace the fan and or heat-sink if necessary.
__________4.2. Give proper ventilation for your CPU & system, so that it stays as cool as possible, ref. Slow Computer page.
__________4.3. Ensure that the power supply fan is likewise dust free and fully functional.

5. Indiscriminate reboots could occur if improper hardware drivers are installed.

• Verify that there aren't conflicts in Device Manager. These issues as they could be the cause of your problem.

• Access by Start... Control Panel... System and Security... Device Manager
Windows Device Manager

This will show you if there are any conflicts or missing drivers by and exclamation mark, just as there is when Windows does not recognise some hardware.

Unknown Device
You can Update your drivers in Device Manager to ensure that your PC has the right and or the latest drivers for your computer hardware, particularly the latest video drivers. Conflicts or out-of-date drivers can cause indiscriminate rebooting. An exclamation mark indicated an error, in Device Manager you can right click on any device, as shown in the graphic below, and choose the best option to resolve any issues.

Driver Update

6. Computer keeps rebooting at startup. The most common reason for this is a malicious code. Your system could be, in all probability, infected with a viruses, that has tampered with system settings and files. To resolve this boot from your Anti-Virus recovery disk and run a full scan in the screen it presents. This emphasises keeping your antivirus software up to date.
