Updating Mac OSX.
The Apple Mac OS is designed the automatically check for updates and will do so as long as your system is connected to the Internet.
If you want to check that is has the latest updates.
Choose Apple Menu ( The   in the top left hand corner of your screen)
Choose Software Update, this will automatically engage in checking for the latest updates.
This process activates a windows that checks for updates, if it finds any it will install them, if it does not it will let you know and prompt you to quite the process.
Mac Update
If you are unsure and want to ensure that you have the latest updates then follow these steps:-
Choose System Preferences from your Applications Menu and then choose Software Updates.
As the graphic below shows this gives you a window that allows you to manually -

    • Check Now for updates;
    • schedule you updates;
    • and to check the updates already installed.
