There are a few things that can cause a Mac to run slow, be it an iMac, Macbook, Macbook Pro, Macbook Air or Power Mac.
Possibilites:

1. Not enough RAM (Memory)
2. Not enough available hard drive space (The Mac 64bit OS uses empty hard disk space very effectively but it needs to be free space)
3. Disk permissions need repairing

1. Not enough RAM

Mac OSX has a fantastic piece of Utility software called Activity Monitor - Applications > Utilities> Activity Monitor, which can show you all of the resources your Mac is using including how much RAM you have and how much of it your system is using. This will adjust accordingly when you start and close programs. It can also reveal memory Hogs or programs than monopolise the RAM.

To free up the RAM

  1. Close programs that you are not using
  2. Eliminate unnecessary login times
  3. Clean up your desktop (All items on the desktop use up resources, remove any unnecessary ones)
  4. Eliminate unnecessary dashboard widgets

If after all of this you still have issues consider upgrading your RAM according to your system specification. Email or call us on 0419 959 948 for any help you require with this.

Note: You can also just check how much RAM you have by click on the Apple at the top left of your screen and selecting “About This Mac”.

2. Not Enough Available Hard Drive Space:
This is another reason your Mac could be running slow . You can also see how much hard drive space you have available in the Disk Usage tab of the Activity monitor, or simply open a Finder window & in the bottom grey stripe - it shows how much space is available.

If the capacity of your hard disk is nearly full then consider deleting programs an files that you no longer need, these can be copied off to and external drive or burned onto a DVD. If your drive reaches critical capacity your Mac will malfunction considerably. If you simply cannot free up anymore hard disk space then consider replacing it with a bigger one. Email or call us on 0419 959 948 for any help you require with this, we can clone your drive onto an external drive or a larger drive for you.

3. Repair Disk Permissions:
In Applications>Utilities>Disk Utility
Disk Utility

  1. selecting the hard drive
  2. selecting “Repair Disk Permissions” .

The results will be a faster, more efficient Mac.
You can implement this procedure as a part of a routine maintenance policy.
