The importance of Saving documents or projects when working on a computer.
The unfortunate truth is that many people don't pay attention to saving their work until the first time they lose an hour's work when the program they are working in stops responding or the computer freezes. Some people don’t even learn then, but keep going repeatedly not saving their work until the end. People need to change their approach to such work in order to overcome the chance of losing more work.
When you start working on a document or project the computer & program keeps your work in a temporary format, dedicating resources to hold onto your undefined work until you save it. Once you have saved your work the computer can work more effectively and you have in effect created a restore point for your work.
If you have saved your work and the program you are working in freezes, or stops responding, you will still be able to recover your work after you have restarted the program or the computer. If you have not saved your work this will not be possible.
The first time you save –
After working a few minutes, stop to save.
1. Go to File… and select
2. Save or Save As... it is usually the Save As window that opens.
3. Give your file a name, i.e, call it something relevant to its content.
4. Save your work regularly.
Autosave: Most programs have the option to Autosave your work as you go, once you have initially saved it.
In Microsoft programs such a Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc., this facility is found under
Tools…
Options…
Save...
tab, in there you will find a check box to click to allow autosaving.
It will be in a similar place in non-Microsoft programs as well.
Sometimes, if the program you are working in freezes, or "stops responding" it has the facility to recover the document you are working in, i.e., the program manages to store your work in a temporary format and when you restart the program it some up with your work as a recovered file. If this happens you are fortunate and can then save that document as a secure document or project, with whatever name you want to give it. Be aware that this is the exception rather than the rule, programs are indiscriminate about what they auto recover and what they do not. Err on the safe side and save your work.
One last time, Save, Save, Save!
